Election Of Committees In County Begun For ! Conservation Program Ballots were distributed this week to all farmers of Cherokee county for the purpose of electing community and county committees and delegates in the Agricultural Conservation Pro gram for the year 1941. The ballots sent out by A. Q. Ket- | ner. secretary to the county com- i mittee. carried suggestions to the far- I mers in choosing the committeemen according to ability and qualifica tions. A list of former committee men also accompanied the letter. Committees will be elected in Not la. Hothouse, Valleytown. Beaver dam. Shoal Creek and Murphy com munities. along with alternates to serve in case of resignation or to act as delegates. Each of these com mittees is composed of three mem bers. All balloting in the election will end on October 12 at which time the committeemen and their position on the committee will be determined by the number of votes each receives. Murphy Hi Defeats Robbinsville 18-0 In Tilt Here Friday Murphy capitalized on two long touchdown passes and an intercepted pass to win their first home game over Robbinsville Friday afternoon 18-0. Tke first marker registered by the Murphy team came on a 35-yard pass from Mallonee to Amos who ran 35 more yards to score. The second touchdown resulted from a 25-yard pass, Mallonnee to Ramsey, who gal loped 40 yards for the tally again. Plott, Murphy center, intercepted a Robbinsville pass on the 25 yard line and ran it back to the four, from where Wilson plunged over for the final score. Robbinsville made their only ser ious threat in the first period when they recovered a fumbled punt on Murphy's 25-yard line. The locals heJ'j for downs, however, and man aged to keep the visitors on the other side of the center stripe for the re mainder of the game. Mallonnee. back, Amos, end, and Plott, center, were outstanding for the locals. The Murphy second team, which played the visitors for a large part of the game, also showed much strength. Registration Books To Be Opened Saturday Registration books will be open every Saturday for the next three Saturdays beginning October 12, in all voting precincts in Cherokee county in order to give all voters an opportunity to register before the general election November 5, the board of elections announced this week. The fourth Saturday, or Saturday directly prior to election day. will be challenge day. Challenges may be made, however, at any time prior to voting of the questionable elector, i o PRIZE WINNER There wer? exhibits at the recent Cherokee County Fair this year of which people of the county might well be proud. Among them, rep resenting the Peachtree section were the exhibits of Mrs. W. A. Puctt. who took first prize of S25 in cash, awarded by the Fair Association. Also awarded Mrs. Puett was a beautiful silver vegetable dish given ointly by the Cherokee Scout and he T. W. Woods and Son Seed Com pany. of Richmond. Va. Mrs. Puett is of the Peachtree community. MURPHY TO MEET ANDREWS IN GRID BATTLE FRIDAY Starting Whistle Is Scheduled To Blow At 1 O'clock Here Andrews and Murpliy will renew their decade-old gild leud on the Murphy field Friday afternoon in what promises to te the closest name the two teams ever played. The Rame is called at 1.00 P. M 'C S T." Both teams registered victories in tilts during the past week end and are in fine shape both morally and physically. The Bulldogs have been drilling hard all week for the And tews meet and promise to give the Wildcats a reai ru?. for their money. Coach Pitzer reports no injuries among his charges, while a like re port comes from the Andrews squad. The Andrews-Murph;.- game is never an ordinary meeting End the fans usually get their money's worth. Climaxing ten years of football riv alry and age-old athletic rivalry in all departments, this year's game should d aw the largest crowd in the history of the meet. So far this year. Andrews has played three games, losing to Can ton and Wayncsville, and winning from Cherokee. Murphy has only played two games, a loss to Sylva high and a victory over Robbinsville. Ketner, county agent, an nounced this week that all premium winners at the local county fair two weeks ago could receive their prize money by callm? by his office either Friday, Saturday or Monda7. Local Unit Teachers Will Attend Asheville Convention On Friday The Murphy hitih and elementary schools will be closed all day Fri day. October 19. when all teachers in the Murphy unit will attend in body ihe Eighteenth Annaual con vention ol the Western District Teachers association to be held in Asheville Thursday and Friday. All business sessions will be conducted in the auditorium or rocm" of the Lee Edwards high school. 730 English Students Are Guests Of Scout In Journalism Study The tenth grade English classes of Murphy High School, 130 strong, visited the Scout office and shop duing the past week end at various periods in connection with their study of journalism. Mrs. W. E. Studstill. instructor, directed the students through the printing platit and, with the assist ance of a staff member, explained ?he various operations in the print ing of a complete newspaper. All illustrations in the print shop ran parallel to the students' study of journalism on which each was fully prepared before visiting the Scout plant, making the tour of the shop much more interesting and understandable. In addition to the practical study ot printing, many of the improvements of modern print ing were noted in contrast to the methods used years ago in the age old art. Neighboring Civic Clubs Entertained By Murphy Lions In Inter-Club Meeting The Murphy Lions club was host to visitors from civic clubs in Rob binsville. Andrews and Kayeeville art the regular quarterly inter-club meeting here Tuesday night in the Methodist church. A total of approximately 75 mem bers of the three Lion* clubs and Andrews Rotary club, including the wives, attended the meet. Repres entatives of the Bryson City and Franklin clubs were not present. President Jack Lance, of Young Harris college, made the principal address of the evening speaking on the subject. "American Plan of Life." He was introduced by P. G. Ivie. president of the local club. X. B. Hudson, of the Andrews Rotary club, introduced members of his club present, and addressed the group Hefly. Members of the Rob binsville club were introduced by W. W. Wiggins, president, and mem bers of the Hayesville club were In troduced by T. C. In the event a man is 35. he is still required to register until he reaches the age of 36. All schools in the county unit will be closed for the registration as many of the precinct polling places are in school buildings. Also many of the teachers will necessarily be used in the registration. Registrat ion for the two Murphy precincts will be held in the courthouse. All members of the advisory board will have charge of and supervise all legislation of draftees m this coun ty. These men are giving their serv ices without compensation. Broughton To Speak , At County Democrat Rally On November 1 J. M. Broughton, democratic nom inee for governor, has been secured as speaker for a Democratic rally to be held in the Murphy court house Friday night, November 1, ai. cording to H. A. Mattox. democrat county chairman. Although arrangements have not been completed yet. Mr. Mattox stat ed, several other party officials and candidates are expected to take part, including Zebulorl Weaver, congress man. Edwin Whitaker. candidate for state senPtor. and J. D. Mallonee Jr.. candidate for house of represent atives. Spread Plant Ships First Lot Of Goods The first shipment of bedspreads from Murphy's new plant. La Sondra. was made Friday, according to W. M. Kittles, proprietor of the plant. Actual operations were begun in the plant on Tuesday of last week but most of the work was on past orders received before the factory was installed here. Several orders have been received In Murphy, how ever. and operations are going ahead I at full speed.
